Seagate Research is hiring!
The list below includes multiple full-time positions at the Research center for the storage systems research group working in two major project areas:
Project - Scalable Storage - enable the deployment of massive collections of disk drives to support petabyte-scale archives and clusters. Systems with 1,000 or even 10,000 individual disk drives (1-10 PB total capacity) are no longer the domain of supercomputing, but are becoming commonplace in the commercial world. Rather than deleting data, corporations are realizing the value of large-scale, long-term data archiving in helping them tackle engineering issues, make sense of customer information, uncover historical trends, or just manage all the information that a modern group of knowledge workers requires and produces. Key technical issues for such systems include reliability, performance, security, metadata and adaptive management.
Project - Seamless Movement of Digital Data - understand the underlying technical issues in the communication among consumer devices to exchange and synchronize stored data. The goal of this project is to improve how today's media-rich devices talk to each other - e.g., digital cameras, camcorders, TVs, PVRs and PDAs - and to identify the technical barriers to seamless interoperability among all the gadgets that play a central role in managing people's data. Why does it seem so difficult to do? Can existing technology for disconnected operation, distributed systems or peer-to-peer neatly address the issues? Skills desired include a knowledge of networking, file systems, operating systems, peer-to-peer computing, or multimedia.

GEOSYS
I'm presently working part-time for a company named GEOSYS, doing R&D on automating collection and processing of imagery from a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for mapping, disaster management, urban planning, etc... The company is research-motivated and laid-back, and they're trying to hire a new person soon.
They need someone full-time, so, this may not be applicable for the majority of grads, but I'm hoping someone might be graduating soon or know a friend that might be interested (feel free to forward as you see fit). The primary requirements are that you be a good C++ programmer (experience with OO) and have taken the computer vision courses (505 & 525). Other courses which are pertinent are optimization (542), machine learning (540), algorithms and parallel computation. These are not requisites but you would definitely be able to use what you learned in them. The work is R&D, so there is definitely a strong research and learning aspect to the job!
The company is small, but growing, so there are plenty of opportunities to take leadership. We have several funded research projects on the go, another that I'm currently developing, and part of your duties will be to pursue new directions that you come up with. Babak, the president, is easy going (he worked at MacDonald Dettwiler before he started this company) and is flexible on working hours.
If you'd like to hear more details, or have any questions, please let me know and we'll talk.

Adobe’s Creative Technologies Lab (CTL)
Adobe’s Creative Technologies Lab (CTL) has openings in Seattle, the Boston area, San Francisco, and San Jose for student internships. We are looking for PhD students who are excited to push the state of the art in computer graphics, vision/audio research, visualization, HCI, and more — in ways that could be of interest to Adobe as well as the research community at large. We have just started recruiting for summer internships, and we would love to hear from you!
Interns will collaborate with one or more of the researchers in our lab, and will have access to world-class product groups and design teams. We regularly publish our work in top venues such as SIGGRAPH, CVPR, and UIST, while also exploring technology transfer opportunities. We are especially interested in fostering ongoing collaborations, and are open to projects that last beyond the summer and become part of your PhD thesis. We compensate interns well, and strive to create an environment that is both productive and fun.
Our Seattle lab is located in the chic Fremont area, directly on the water (you can kayak to work!) and connected by a bike path to UW. The Newton lab is located on the Green Line "T" with easy access to both Boston and Cambridge. The San Francisco lab is located in the trendy SOMA area, near the ballpark and a short walk from the Caltrain station. The San Jose lab is located at Adobe’s headquarters in the heart of downtown.
To apply, please send your CV to Paris Smaragdis (paris@adobe.com), with the subject line 'CTL intern:'. Internships will be granted on a rolling basis.
The Creative Technologies Lab, which I run, is part of Adobe’s
Advanced Technology Labs (ATL). The full team currently includes:
Aseem Agarwala (Seattle)
Shai Avidan (Newton)
Lubomir Bourdev (San Jose)
Mira Dontcheva (San Francisco)
Dan Goldman (Seattle)
Wilmot Li (San Francisco)
Wojciech Matusik (Newton)
Sylvain Paris (Newton)
David Salesin (Seattle)
Eli Shechtman (Seattle)
Paris Smaragdis (Newton)
Jue Wang (Seattle)
Holger Winnemoeller (Seattle)
Additional internship opportunities exist throughout the year, within our lab as well as other labs in ATL: the Visual Computing Lab, the Document & Application Technology Lab, and the Advanced Systems Technology Lab. To apply for internships in any of these other labs, please send your CV to SimplyBetterJobs@adobe.com.

WorldEvolved
My name is Ittai Balaban. I have recently completed a Ph.D. at NYU in the field of software formal verification, when I decided to join a funded New York City based internet start-up. The start-up has been progressing quickly. We have many upcoming and challenging projects and we are looking for new members to join our technology team. Since the scale of the project is large and the market we are going after is one of the largest opportunities out there, we have already attracted a great group of PhD's and Masters with more joining in May. We have several full-time openings and are looking for talented and motivated software engineers graduating with a bachelor's degree, master's degree or PhD. Recruits would be able to work on a variety of massively scalable systems. Since we just started in May, it's still early enough to have a huge impact and to be a part of some amazing technical achievement!
In order to apply, you must have:
* 3+ years experience using Unix/Linux to run and deploy applications
* 3+ years experience with Java, Python or other object oriented and scripting languages (C#, JavaScript, PHP, Perl, Smalltalk, Lisp)
* Basic knowledge of UML
* Work on a team project
* Experience with J2EE and Java Servlets
* Experience writing unit and system integration tests
* Familiar with synchronous and asynchronous communication models
* Understanding of basic cryptographic primitives: hashing, signatures, encryption, shared keys
* Demonstrated building and deploying an application or system
Other skills we are looking for in applicants include:
* Experience with publish/subscribe systems
* Background in security
* Experience with Eclipse and Subversion
* Experience with database development and knowledge of database internals
* Background in massively-scalable distributed systems
* Experience using machine learning algorithms
* Experience with web services and related methodologies, including REST-style APIs
* Experience using and developing peer-to-peer systems
* Understanding of HTTP requests, network sockets
Interested applicants should send their resume and unofficial transcript to

Here is some background information about our start-up:
WorldEvolved is the second venture for Heidi Messer and Stephen Messer, the sister and brother team who founded, built and sold LinkShare Corporation (http://www.linkshare.com) acquired by a Japanese portal for $425m in 2005. The transaction is widely recognized as one of the most significant investor exits in the New York new media market in the last decade. For more information, visit http://www.linkshare.com/press/rakuten.shtml. Having revolutionized the world of e-commerce with their last company, the Messers are in the process of launching a new game changing initiative. They are now recruiting an elite team and add to an already talented pool of Ph.D developers and experienced Internet executives. The company is still in stealth mode and thus information on what is being developed will only be provided after an initial screening of prospective candidates who have signed non-disclosure agreements. The company is headquartered in midtown in New York City.
